more about Lightside

Hey everyone,

Here's your heads-up that Justine Kurland's show This Train Is Bound For Glory at Mitchell, Innes & Nash is closing Saturday, November 14. It's certainly worth the trip if you haven't been.

Also of note: Opening Thursday, November 12, at the Aperture Gallery is a specially produced installation of Barbara Crane's Private Views - Public Places project from the 1980s.

See more info below.

Enjoy,

Keddie Wye: 2007, 24 x 31.5 Optical C-Print

Justine Kurland's This Train is Bound for Glory has been well reviewed in The New Yorker, New York, Time Out: New York, and beyond ... much of the writing touches on just how much of Kurland there is in these photographs. Many of the descriptions of nomads adrift in the American West - and of the landscape itself as a metaphor for the wanderlust of the American spirit - reflect Kurland's personal energy, which is smartly on display for just another week.

The exhibition consists of various sized conventionally enlarged c-prints. Kurland printed the 11 x 14, 16 x 20 and 20 x 24 pieces herself and LTI produced the 24 x 31.5, 30 x 40 and 40 x 50s as well as provided the mounting.

Barbara Crane is enjoying a great deal of attention this year. The Chicago Cultural Center has launched a six decade retrospect of her work, Barbara Crane: Challenging Vision and Aperture has published a beautiful volume of Private Views.

LTI / lightside worked with Aperture to produce a limited edition of twenty 8 x 10 Fujiflex digital-c prints from a special edit of Private Views curated specifically for the Aperture Gallery.

more about Lightside

Hi all,

We recently imaged and mounted a group of prints for photographer Denny Renshaw that are a part off a pretty cool program of events at 92Y Tribecca this Saturday night.

The NYC premiere for the DVD release of Sufjan Stevens' film The BQE, plus a musical performance by Osso (among others) are combined with the opening of Renshaw's photographs which promises to make for an interesting evening ....read on below for details.

Denny Renshaw: The BQE
92Y Tribecca, New York, NY October 24 / December 15

This exhibition consists of eight 40 x 50 digital c-prints that represent the latest collaboration between Denny Renshaw and indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens. The project began for Renshaw back in 2007 when he was commissioned to create photographic studies for Stevens' "symphonic and cinematic exploration of New York City's infamous Brooklyn-Queens Expressway", a work that became the critically acclaimed BAM performance and award winning film, The BQE.

The landscape images, accompanied by the addition of Renshaw's photographic representations of the hula hooping wonder women in Stevens' comic book, Hooper Heroes, reflect the major themes of the The BQE's multimedia package. His images have been incorporated into a 40 page BQE themed booklet and a stereoscopic 3D View-Master reel.

Saturday evening's events include Stevens' introduction of the film, performance by Osso and an opening set by DM Stith as well as drawings by Jessica Dessner and animated projections by Deborah Johnson.

Just about the nicest thing anyone has said about us ...

What kind of lab do you want?

For those of us that still shoot (lots!) film, our relationship with our lab is critical. Handing over your film to someone else is like handing your child to a stranger. I’ve gone to several labs in the city, but I was never 100% happy with any of them.

A couple of months ago, on a recommendation from a friend, I started going to Lightside/LTI. My friend had recommended I speak to Jeffrey Kane when I got there. Jeffrey came out and was super friendly, explained all the services/pricing, etc. But beyond that, it seemed like he really “got it.” Not sure what it was, but he just had something different than most lab people.

It’s been several months now, and I couldn’t be happier. There have been no mishaps, no lost film, no late orders, nothing weird. And Jeffrey is always a pleasure to talk to. I guess you could sum up his relationship with customers with an email he sent me the other day after a quick conversation about some of my personal projects:

Hey Emiliano,
Here’s a few new-ish magazine links you may or may not be aware of:
http://www.foammagazine.nl/
http://www.gupmagazine.com/

http://www.deardavemagazine.com/

http://www.layflat.org/

Talk soon,
jeffrey kane

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never had my lab care about my development as a photographer or care about what obscure art mags I read! I thought that was pretty awesome. Further proof of Jeffrey’s radness, is that he also sponsors the Women in PhotographyLightside Individual Project Grant.

So swing by LTI/Lightside and say hi to Jeffrey. Tell him I sent you.

And here’s a photo from Erika Larsen who won the WIP/LS Project Grant:

Hello again from Lightside,

Fall is in the air and it feels like everyone is out and about again all at once (thankfully!). As always, there's a long list of must-see exhibitions ... and yet, is there ever enough time for all this?

While you're out looking, I'd like to point out three projects that we worked on over the summer. When taken together, the work of Sebastiaan Bremer, Talia Chetrit and Lawrence Beck create an interesting overview of what's happening in photography right now.

You can grab a quick look via the linked images below but do yourself the favor and stop in to spend a moment at the galleries in person. I think you'll find it well worth the effort. All three shows run through mid-October.

Enjoy,

After Color: Curated by Amani Olu

Bose Pacia Gallery, New York, NY: July 8 / August 21, 2009

Curator Amani Olu (Humble Arts Foundation) "examines how artists employ conceptual black + white photography to strengthen their ideas and how such usage comments on the dominance of large-scale color photography as seen in the contemporary art world over the last 25 years".

Lightside and LTI provided conventional black + white printing, mounting and framing services for Talia Chetrit's photographic Gradient Tool series and framing for Michael Buhler-Rose's mixed media Edition series.

Hi all,

I'd like to alert everyone of a unique opportunity to see an extraordinary piece of art by Sebastiaan Bremer.

On view at James Fuentes LLC through June 28th is Bremer's "Triptych". In Fuentes' words, Triptych is "a masterwork in its scale, technique and inverted syntax".

Three individual panels measuring 38" x 78" each make up Triptych, a virtual collision of modern representational methods, old master influences and the artist's personal history.

Of particular interest here is an unusual chance for the viewer to scrutinize Bremer's ink and paint application technique unobstructed as these large scale panels are presented without framing or glazing.

I sincerely suggest making the trip to Fuentes to experience Triptych with your own eyes.

Sebastiaan Bremer Triptych
James Fuentes, LLC
May 5 - June 28, 2009

Triptych represents over two years of research and production. The base of this piece is a backlit portrait of the artist's son in profile. The original negative was scanned and imaged on digital c-print material and mounted on (3) 38" x 78" dibond panels. Bremer then interpreted Rembrandt's The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds in various ink mediums and acrylic paint directly onto the surface of the original prints.

Lightside and LTI have been working with Bremer on various projects since 2007. You can see additional images of Sebastiaan in his studio during the production of multiple pieces, including Triptych, by clicking on the image below.

Bremer recently completed a commission for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Solo exhibitions have been held at Barbara Thumm, Berlin; Hales Gallery, London; Air de Paris, Paris and Gemeentemuseum, The Hague. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, The Zabludowicz Trust and The Rabobank Collection, among others.

Hello all,

The months of April and May for Lightside are entwined with Renwick Gallery.

Check out their current exhibition "Jason Martin wants to be a punk rocker" ... not only because it's a cool show but because we imaged and mounted the digital c-prints for Jason Kraus as well.

Also, take a minute to visit the Women in Photography website to see the current featured artist Talia Chetrit (who is also represented by Renwick) and while you're there I'd like to inform everyone that we're extending the deadline for submissions on the Women in Photography / Lightside Individual Project Grant an additional two weeks until May 15th.

Lastly, keep an eye on Renwick again in late May for the Meridith Danluck exhibition "Drinkability" ... because yes, we've imaged that show, too.

Ok, enjoy and remember if these e-mails are grating on your nerves you may easily unsubscribe below at anytime.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Kane

The exhibition "Jason Martin wants to be a punk rocker" at Renwick Gallery is the first collaborative effort between the Los Angeles based artists, Jason Kraus and Martin Kersels. The exhibition includes kinetic sculpture, video, drawing and of course, photography. Kraus and Renwick contacted Lightside / LTI directly for assistance in producing over 10 digital c-prints from digital capture files which depict the aftermath of a destructive punk rock performance. The artists have paired the digital-c prints in a series of diptychs with drawings. You can see more images from the show here.
